In our school there is a tradition. Every year, in spring, the pupils choose a theme for the photo contest. The contest takes up to two month and, right before the year ends, the best photos are chosen by a group of teachers and pupils.

Last year, the theme was Pets. The winner was Alice, who photographed a lot of black ants in a terrarium. She calls it an ant farm. It was a great photo. Probably the best photo I have ever seen in my life.

Everyone else thought of cats and dogs, Emil even took o photo of his cousin’s iguana – he got the second place. I never thought Alice is a fan of ants, but now I can see why she likes them. Red ants are usually very aggressive, and black ants are typically more passive. I think this is why she chose the black ones. Also, I don’t know if there are any red ants around the city.

Owning your own ant farm is a fascinating learning experience from more points of view: will give you a first-rate view of ants building intricate tunnels and paths, and then scurrying through like they're on a mission.

I can barely wait for this year’s theme. I think Alice will have a good photo in the contest no matter the theme. Photography is her second interest, after the ant farm.
