Silence is just as easy to interpret as a direct answer. It can mean 'yes' or 'no', depending on the context, you can always tell. People use silence as a more profound way of answering, of clarifying a situation. Many characters, whether from books or movies, pause when asked a question, hinting that the answer is obvious, even though words may contradict it. Silence is a really good answer and it speaks louder than words. Silence may be offensive or humbling, hurtful or conciliatory, you'll always feel its meaning, it doesn't need explaining.
